Dinner Date for Two

Gaius didn't usually go out of his way to try to impress people... actually he probably had never gone out of his way to impress anyone because he didn't think it was worth the effort. That wasn't to say he was lazy, though he was fairly lazy, no it was just that there were very few people he actually cared enough about. Oh he liked a lot of the people in his life plenty well enough... but Asuka... Asuka was quite different. What he saw was not merely a girl who stood up for herself, but one who was practically craving a love that was missing in her life. More than anything he wanted to be that love in her life.

So he was cleaned up, shaved, well dressed, and he even had a bouquet of long stemmed roses squirreled away in his cape to surprise her with. He made reservations at a fancy restaurant, using a few of the connections he had from ordering their pastries which were some of the finest in the cosmos. Yes, when it came to feeding his sugar addiction he made connections that spread across worlds to find the sweetest and tastiest confections known to mankind. Tonight though was more about dinner than desert... though he was certainly hoping that Asuka would be willing to have desert... ~~Or be desert~~...

He cleared his mind of the dirty thoughts, ~~Like Asuka covered in whipped cream and begging him to have a tas- no, no, he had to stop!~~ and knocked on her door. He was still wearing what he normally did, but it was much cleaner, fresher, and he even cleaned out all the old syrup, sugar, and jelly stains from it. He'd told her she could wear just about anything she liked since that's exactly what he was doing, but he did drop mention of the fact that he would take her to a fancy place because he thought she deserved to be spoiled a bit more. So he was curious as to how she might look when she greeted him at the door, mentally preparing himself for the absolute worst, but hoping to see that gorgeous smile on her face again.

What was the worst case scenario? Asuka looking like she just came out of a blast zone with her hair lit on fire, her clothes covered in mud, her having a hangover from hell that made her look like a zombie that wanted to claw his brains out, and her carrying around the severed head of Shinji. Yes, he shuddered at the very idea of it, but even if things were at their worst, he'd at least try to get her cleaned up, bury the body, hide the evidence, have her skip town, and give her a raincheck on that date. Wow... if he was willing to go that far, he really was smitten wasn't he? He needed to get out of his head and stop being so damn nervous about this date... he had to be more cool and collected or else she'd eat him for breakfast. He was hoping to wait for the second date for that. Yup here he was, ex-con chuckling over a joke inside his own damn head and waiting for the girl of his dreams to answer the door on their first date.

[ She stops chewing the ice cube, frozen in place by everything that she's hearing. He really was the perfect guy, wasn't he? She had almost forgotten that they were talking about desert before. ]

R-right! Um.. i think.. The cheesecake sounds good. I'll try that.

[ God it was so hard for her to try to speak again after all that. She cleared her throat once, shaking it off. Toying with the ends of her ponytail again she tried a different topic. ]

Are there any sweets you don't like? Or do you just love them all?

Good choice... I think I'll ask them to just cut us an extra large slice so we can share.

[Because if there was one thing he enjoyed, it was definitely sharing sweets with her, even if it wasn't through direct kissing like last time. He motioned over to the waiter who was standing by, pointed out what they wanted on the menu, speaking a few words in french again, and using his hands to emphasize that he was looking for a bigger piece for them to share. As the waiter walked off, taking any empty plates, Gaius couldn't help but chuckle again.]

Ohohoho! You may think I'm a sweets fiend who likes all sweets large and small, but I'm a gourmet when it comes to my sweets. A poorly crafted sweet is one of the greatest sins in my mind! Trust me, I've tried to make a few odds and ends myself that were just utter garbage because they lacked the right consistency. I suppose if we get down to it though, I don't like bitter or sour sweets quite as much, because they come close to being what I'm looking for, but if they lean too much towards bitter or sour they just ruin it for me.

I've only gotten to have high quality sweets once before now.

[ The other time, back in Germany. When her nanny brought her candies after her mother.. Left.

She shakes that thought off, its unimportant and ruining her mood. So she brings her focus back to his charming smile, and how fondly he talks about sweets. ]

You should try German candies. They're not very good. Well, except for the chocolates..

Really? Huh... well then this ought to be quite the treat for you... and I suppose I could also share a few things from my secret stash with you now and then if you share a few things of your own with me.

[Like any sweets you find! ... Oh... And you know... your body, that's good too. Damn he really wondered where his priorities were sometimes, but at least he didn't say any of this out loud, or he would have sounded really lame.]

Actually I have. Believe it or not, I have contacts through a few friends of mine who get me sweets from alternate dimensions, so I've had sweets from all over planet Earth too. Granted I haven't had some of the more niche specific back-town candy shop places because my contacts are only so good, but... well when you've got an addiction as bad as mine, it sort of evolves into its own hobby. Gotta admit though, it can be pretty pricey to keep up with all my connections at times.

[ One Asuka with whipped cream and a strawberry on top coming right up. ]

Thats insane. You must have some intense obsession to go that far.

[ Not that she minds at all though. ]

As much as she hates to admit it, just like Rei, Eva is her life, and so she doesn't really have anything else except her job. What does she say, though? It'd be pretty lame to not have anything. So.. ]

[Gaius did actually do a spit-take on his water there, cleaning up with his napkin as soon as he did it to try to cover up for the fact that he was so surprised to hear those words even whispered out of her mouth.]

W-wow... I'm... I am incredibly flattered... and betting this probably bodes well for my chances with you too. I um... I'm sorry if I embarrassed you just now, I just was not expecting to hear that for some reason. It's just... I've sort of adored you for a while from afar, so to hear you feel like you love me that much... it's... it's almost more than I could have hoped for.

[He coughed covering up his embarrassment again.]

Look, I've already confessed I love you, you've already confessed you love me... but I guess somehow I wasn't sure just how much you might love me? Some people throw love around casually, some people think the word is the end all where they don't say it unless they're willing to stay devoted to that love forever. In my case... well...

[He fumbled around in his cloak for a few seconds before pulling out a small box.]

I was going to wait on this, but I thought you should at least see it. You don't have to accept it yet, you don't even have to look at it if you don't want to... but I mentioned I was a bit of a jeweler right? Well I started working on something special for you when you said you'd go on that dinner date with me... and it's not quite finished yet, I have put in most of the stones, and it might not fit just right yet since I was doing it from memory but...

[If Asuka couldn't guess what was in the box... Gaius had made her a silver engagement ring, spun in intricate little shapes, as if one half side of the ring were dragon's wings, while the other half were angel's wings. In the center there was a star shaped area where five gems were to be placed with one bigger one in the center.]

L-Like I said... it's not much yet but... I was hoping that maybe you might one day consent to be my wife.

[ There was an audible gasp, and a slight pause, as she knew what was coming next. If someone had offered her an engagement ring a few weeks ago, she would've said no and walked away on the spot, withought even thinking about it. She wasn't ready for that kind of commitment yet!

And here she was thinking about it.

He had said it wasn't done, that she could take her time and think about it. Part of her wanted to leap out of her chair and scream yes while doing a dance on the table. And that other part was still held back, even with everything that had happened tonight, there was still that voice in the back of her mind, telling her that something would go wrong. That he might not really care that much. Even though it was clear as day that he did.

And so this argument in her mind kept her unable to make any movements or say anything. But maybe he'd think that she was saying no if she didn't do anything. How to respond... Think, Asuka think. ]

I um..

[ She coughed to clear her throat. She really wanted to say "yes of course" but something was holding her back. Just say it, dammit. ]

I-I need to go to the bathroom!!

[ You know.. To clear her mind. Asuka hopes he doesn't get the wrong idea. ]

Uh yeah! Don't worry um... it's over that way, they're really fancy and everything so uh... take your time... I'll just... be waiting for you.

[He didn't want to say he'd put the ring away to give her the idea that he was backpedaling out of this as fast as he could because she needed time to think. He also wasn't wanting to pressure her into making any decision one way or the other, because like he said he wanted her to be able to take her time to think about it. He was a little old fashioned sometimes so... having her marry him just felt like the natural thing to do before they started having sex or anything... aaaand the moment she's gone...]

DAMMIT GAIUS! Stupid, stupid, stupid moron!

[Gaius was bashing his head into the table for jumping the gun so damn early. They met what... yesterday? Asking to marry her after just one day no matter how magical everything was, was just... arrrgh! How could he be so freaking STUPID! She was only 15 for Naga's sake! How was she supposed to feel about getting married?! Hell he'd probably be scared to death about it except... he just loved her so much he hadn't cared enough to think it through! Hell he still loved her so much he couldn't think of anyone he'd rather ever spend the rest of his life with. Yet he jumped the gun, rushed things, and now he might have done irrevocable damage!

He sighed and just... pulled down the cloth hiding the x-mark on his arm lamenting once again some of his life choices.] Do the crime, pay the time, right Gaius? [He just sighed sadly to himself again, looking at the little wedding band he'd made for her. Too much too soon... he needed to give her time, and like he always did, he rushed right into things headfirst thinking he could handle it because it was him. They were more alike in that way than he even knew, and before she could return, he covered his arm back up again. He looked at the ring once more and... put it away, so that she wouldn't have to think about it again for a while.]

One day maybe... Maybe one day I'll learn to slow down, be patient, and not rush in full of over-confidence.

(ooc: Haha, sorry about Gaius jumping the gun on Asuka like that, but it's 100% canon for the Fire Emblem cast to be pretty fast about proposing to the people they're in love with :P)

(ooc: nono its fine! I know that! Asuka's just still a bit of an immature kid (despite what she says) so shes ~taking her time~ ~~i mean she hasn't said no yet~~)

[ Meanwhile in the bathroom, Asuka had locked herself away in a stall and was re-thinking the events of the night, just to make sure it wasn't all a dream.

Nobody had ever even said "I love you" to Asuka before, and yet here she was, being offered a ring and a partner for the rest of her life. It wasn't like she could picture herself with anyone else, though. Whenever she would think about her future lately, he was always right there next to her.

Was she even ready for marriage? She liked to think so but--

"You're still a child, Asuka."

How many times had Kaji's words rolled around in her mind? She was just a kid. A stupid kid who probably knew nothing about love and was just as dumb as everyone else. She didn't feel like a kid though. And she knew what she wanted most in this world was to spend the rest of her life, standing next to Gaius, tasting sweets and listening to his cornball lines that he'd hit on her with, and laughing at his jokes, and admiring the stories he'd tell her. Thats what she saw herself doing.

And so she made her way back to the table, attempting to find that confidence that she had dropped somewhere when she got up from the table. ]

[ And then, with her hands on her hips, attempted to look as confident as ever, but instead ended up looking kinda angry. ]

Hey.

I-- I uh..

[ Long awkward pause. ]

..

Yes.

[ She lets out a sigh of relief. She finally just said it.]

So don't look so upset.

[To hell with formality, or appearances, or anything! Gaius stands up, wraps his arms around Asuka, and kisses her on the lips right there and then. He doesn't care if she beats him up for it, or even if the waiter comes back and sees them, or if a damn dragon came in the room and started breathing fire everywhere, she said YES! He was kissing her with all the passion and intensity he felt in that moment, too overcome with love, and joy, and sheer bliss to hold back any longer! She was his now, fully and completely, and no matter what happened he was going to love her the rest of his life, even if he had to climb mountaintops with his teeth!]

Oh Asuka...

[He barely breathed out the words, not wanting to stop kissing her, his lips heatedly caressing hers, not going so over the top since they were still in a public place, but still with the same heated intensity of his earlier kisses. He was ready to just... throw her over his shoulder and carry her off into the sunset with him, or carry her off like a princess to a faraway castle. He just couldn't help but to hold onto her tightly in his arms as if she might slip away. The only thing that did finally get him to stop was a polite 'ahem' as the waiter had indeed returned with his cheesecake.]

[ When he embraced her, she had been taken a little by surprise, seeing as how one moment he was sitting down, and the next he had her pressed against his body while their lips were pressed together in a way that felt completely different from before. It was a good different, though. There were little claps and smiles from the tables that were a few feet away, congratulating the two of them. Asuka slid her arms around his neck, pulling into the kiss a little more. But she blushed after she noticed the waited standing behind them with their cake.. So, she sat back down across from him with the warmest smile she'd had all night and watched as the waiter set down the cake in front of them and left. ]

[Gaius scooped a little bit of the cake onto a fork and offered it to her, letting her have the first taste while his other hand reached back into his cloak to discreetly slip the ring back on the table, so that she hopefully wouldn't notice it was ever gone. Sometimes he was glad he was good at sleight of hand, but in this case he was just over the moon happy.]

Well Asuka, I guess this means we have the rest of our lives together. The only question remaining after this is, your place or mine? Or... somewhere else entirely?

[Of course, the second she opened her mouth to speak he'd push that little forkful of cake into her mouth with a cheeky little grin.]

[ Opening her mouth, she took the little piece of cake and practically swooned at the taste. There was a fuzzy feeling in her stomach already, and cake probably wouldn't help.. But it was good and there was a sort of vibe in the air that just made the cake taste so much better. Once she had swallowed, she spoke, her voice still a little shaken from nerves and excitement. ]

Anywhere is fine with me.

[ Although she had to pilot Eva, if he really wanted to, she wouldn't mind too much if they went to his home or stayed here or went somewhere completely new. Eva was all she knew. The only thing she'd ever had. And it'd caused her some damage in the past. But, she would probably be able to fight better than ever now that she had him. She didn't have anything to worry about. But if he didn't want to live there, she wouldn't mind that either. They could find someone else to pilot 02, right? ~~Even though unit 02 was her baby, and the thought of someone else piloting it made her sick.~~ ]

Whatever you want. I'll go wherever you decide.

In that case...

[Gaius scooped a fork-full for himself, toes curling in his boots at the exquisite flavor mixed with the fact that he'd just had the fork in Asuka's mouth which was kind of fun in and of itself. He still had to think though, because up and abandoning everyone in his world wasn't exactly all that nice of him, since there was no telling if Chrom might need him. He was still sort of fighting for his cause after all but...]

In that case, I'll tail around with you. You still have a world to save anyways, even if you don't care much for some of the people in it. Maybe this will give you a chance to rub their face in it a little that you found someone who appreciates everything that you are, and I can try to set up a place for you and I to live on our own there. Maybe once your world is saved, you can come with me to my own.

[Of course he hadn't mentioned yet that... well he'd probably have to leave from time to time if duty called, but he expected she'd very likely have to do the exact same thing so where was the harm? Besides, maybe he could help improve Shinji by giving him a few life pointers so he wasn't as intolerable a eva pilot partner to work with.]

Sooo that's that then. I'll go with you.

[ Because he had said that there were a couple people from his world that he cared about. Meanwhile she didn't care about anyone from her world. ]

[ Because it was improbable that the world would ever be saved for good. She understood that when she began piloting.

But going back to his world sounded just as nice.]

Well I see it like this. Given enough time in your world, either they'll find someone you're okay enough with replacing you in the Eva project, or my friends and I will be used to me being over there enough, that they'll understand I'm your husband now and I plan to stay with you no matter what it takes. So they'll probably try to find someone able to fill my shoes. Either way, I love you too much to uproot you from everything you know right away.

[He scooped up another rather large piece of cake circling it around as if he couldn't decide whether or not to give it to her or him, before just plopping it in his own mouth with a wink.]

Do you get any vacation time by any chance? Perhaps we can visit my world during that time, and you can come to decide if you'd prefer to stay there with me more. So either way I have absolute faith that it'll work out. Or if neither world strikes your fancy, I can always bring you to a different outrealm through the gate in my world. Life with me can be a continuous adventure if you so wish it, never settling down, always chasing the next horizon to see what more there is out there for us.

[ She takes her own fork and takes a scoop of cake for herself. ]

We don't really get vacations. We fight when the Angels attack and then.. We do what we can when they don't attack. Sometimes they can go a while without attacking and then suddenly show up. But during those time's we usually have to train. Y'know.. Make sure we're still fit to be pilots and all that.

[ Husband. She liked that word. She really liked that word. ]

But maybe I'll leave for a while.. Maybe someone else can pilot for me..

[ As much as she hates to admit it, the only one she trusts even remotely to pilot it properly is Rei, because despite everything, Asuka knows and acknowlages that Rei is an excellent pilot. And the only one who wouldn't completely destroy her unit.

But she doesn't want Rei anywhere near unit 02 at the same time.

On the other hand, they were engaged now, right? Right. So she would most likely want to go to his world and meet all the people in his life. People he knew before he knew Asuka. ]
