To the hot springs!
Dec. 15th, 2014 02:22 pmIt seemed like such a simple thing really. Take his fiance away for a surprise luxury trip to a resort for Christmas, have fun with her away from the hustle and hassle of his and her daily work. Oh how very wrong had he been in it being simple. Oh it wasn't the funding, though that wasn't cheap, and it wasn't that he may have spoiled some of the surprise... but it certainly was a matter of being on call 24/7 and 'transportation' in a manner of speaking. Misato had taken Gaius aside for a little... 'chat'... more like an inquisitorial interrogation, but she explained a bit more thoroughly what they were up against.
Angels is what they called them, though from what Gaius saw of some of their reccords, they were a lot like the fell dragon Grima. Rather than the fire emblem, magic, or falchion the blade of light, they'd managed to develop mechanical monstrosities capable of combating these things. AT-fields were much like the magical protections Grima had, which was why Falchion was one of the few weapons capable of hurting the beast. Basically, Asuka was one of her world's only hopes because there was no telling how many angels there were, and when or where from they might strike.
He'd heard much of this before through a lost text he'd stumbled upon years before meeting Asuka from a different outrealm world. It's how he was made aware of her in the first place, but the tome chronicling the events was badly damaged... and possibly from her future. He was just a boy when he read it, thinking the events in it were purely fiction... mechanized giants? Angels of the apocalypse? An entire mechanized fortress city? All just a fantasy... until the day he actually met her.
He liked to think of that story growing up because of her. A strong young woman, who grew up with a tough childhood just like him, yet had confidence and a flair for proving to the world she was worth being noticed. For a kid who grew up on the streets, she was practically an ideal role model. Little did he know he'd meet his role model younger than he was, because she was the same age she had been in the transcript he'd stumbled upon. There were many wonders in the outrealms... but never in his wildest dreams had he thought he'd really find the world from a storybook and marry the girl of his childhood dreams.
Yet all of that came with a price... what in his life didn't come with some sort of price or another? He'd been working with Nerv as a private agent for weeks after his engagement to Asuka, not simply because he'd do anything for her, but because that was one of Nerv's conditions to accepting his engagement to her without a fight. As a being from another dimension entirely, his very existence, and the knowledge he possessed was being kept very quiet. Magic was not something this world possessed, and from what he could tell from the way he got here, it couldn't function here normally. Indeed, almost nothing from this world could go through his outrealm gate as a result. He could go to her world, and leave thanks to the magic of his world, but because of the magic this world seemed to lack...
So countless tests were done trying to re-create the magical energies necessary to produce an outrealm gate. Gaius brought countless blueprints with different means for them to attempt, fire, electricity, wind, water, they came closer when they started working at the molecular level, using magi to crack some of the fundamental coding of his universe that didn't coincide with their own. Until one day they used a small AT-field, and the gate roared to life. Tests were done with small animals and test probes first, eventually after several more tests followed by a human being accompanied by Gaius.
The higher ups had been hoping to use this for many purposes, on such purpose being escape. Indeed, if the angels did destroy all life, having an escape route would be incredibly beneficial. The problem they seemed to have was the size of the gate made it impossible for anything larger than a horse to fit through. Otherwise the whole thing seemed to simply fizzle. Really, Gaius date he'd planned for Asuka was the furthest thing from most of their minds, but it was one of the conditions he made in helping them. In the end he had to make a molehill into a mountain, move the mountain, and shrink it back down to a molehill again, but he finally got the desired results. Nerv would let him take Asuka to his hotspring resort, comfortable in the knowledge she could be reached in an emergency.
"It's certainly been a long time getting here but... hopefully it will all have been worth it." He chuckled wryly to himself as he once more found himself ringing Asuka's door, greatly anticipating the chance to see his love smiling just for him.
