Background Information:

Canon specific side note: Most of the canon information for characters from the Fire Emblem series can be found in support conversations, special bits of dialogue which occur when two units spend enough time fighting alongside one another. For the sake of clarity, I usually assume Gaius has gotten all of his support conversations maxed out except for the S class which is what leads to characters getting married.

Personality:
Gaius is like many of your typical rougues and thieves in many respects, he'll steal or do more dishonest lines of work to make ends meet, he doesn't care too much for rules and laws, and he's got very nimble fingers that get him into all kinds of trouble. How Gaius tends to be different from your average lowlife is he actually really does care about others than just himself, and he's got a weakness for sweet things like you wouldn't believe. He'll usually only steal from those he feels can afford it if he can, which is why despite the risks involved, he's often trying to steal from nobility. When you first meet Gaius in Fire Emblem Awakening, he's trying to break into the royal treasury of Ylisse. When he finds out that the group he's with is actually here to assassinate their ruler, he starts to have a crisis of conscience, and with a bit of 'sweet' persuasion he ends up switching sides.

In Robin and Maribelle's support conversations, you find out Gaius has spent time in prison in his more youthful years, and he was granted a 'get out of jail free' card if he helped some rather disreputable nobles. He was asked to break into the royal treasury and say that he was hired by a specific duke that they wanted framed. He told them they could go take a flying leap, preferring to just work off his time in a more honest fashion. Though when he overheard that those nobles planned to kill the dukes daughter since they couldn't get Gaius to work for them, he changed his mind, trying to make them think he was just trying to make them sweeten the deal. He really didn't want to get the girl's father in trouble, but he figured it was better that his name got tarnished than his daughter winding up dead. After that day, Gaius learned more about the nobility than he ever cared to, and he became a bit sadder but wiser in his dealings. The mark on his arm from his prison sentence is a constant reminder of that shame, and as such he almost always keeps it covered and goes out of his way to not have anyone see it.

When you brush the surface of Gaius' personality you get a thick coating of sugar all over your brush, but beneath the sugar coating is a man who's seen a lot more of the world than most people twice his age. He's spent a long time setting up connections with merchants and shadier contacts all over the world, all for one driving goal. Sugar. His sweet tooth is so strong it drives him to rather extreme lengths to try to procure sweet delicacies not easily found. If he could live off of nothing but sweets for the rest of his life he would probably die happy, but in his line of work he has to remember to not take anything to excess or risk slowing down and winding up dead. In his support conversations with Chrom and Robin, you scratch the surface of all the places Gaius has been. Where you really discover some of Gaius' connections is his conversation with Henry in the summer scramble, when he's showing off some of his rarer desserts.

In his conversations with Lissa, Robin, Miriel, and Cherche, you find out that Gaius is a man of many hidden talents as is befitting a rogue. He's been known to sew, do magic tricks, use a forge, make jewelry and miscellaneous knickknacks usually as a way to make ends meet between odd jobs. He's a man that's fairly grounded in the harshness that can come with reality, and has been spending years finding ways to survive however he can. He's a very self-reliant kind of guy because growing up he didn't have anyone to rely on for most of the fundamental things he needed. He didn't grow up in the countryside as a farmer, he was born and raised on the city streets, and he's got more street smarts than anyone in their little army.

When he's talking with Tharja or Cordelia, it's clear that he's also got a lot of self-confidence. He can be rather flirty when it comes to women he finds attractive, even in the face of almost stark disapproval. He knows how to lay on the charm when he wants to because it's a skill that's very useful for staying alive when you're a street urchin. His main motivation for doing things is for the sweeter things in life, usually sugary sweets but also some of the more basic comforts of life. The affection of a beautiful woman, the entertainment of watching street performers juggle flaming hams, a warm fire and a hot meal on a cold night, and something that he only really learned about after joining Chrom and his Shepherds, just having a good friend to share your troubles with.

Slight Headcanon: In the soldier roster for Fire Emblem awakening it's said that Gaius is the one most likely to get nosebleeds in the group. From what I know from Japanese culture and anime, that generally means that he's definitely got a bit of a dirty mind brewing beneath the surface. The evidence supporting this is slightly on the weak side, but I get definite vibes along those lines which is why it's partly just headcanon. We never hear about Gaius parents or his upbringing, but it's fairly safe to assume that he grew up as an orphan on the city streets. It very well may explain why Gaius gets along so well with Libra who runs and orphanage. It may even explain his obsession with sweets, because they were likely much rarer to find for him when he was young and he's making up for lost time. Of course this is all just speculation based off of little tidbits you can read between the lines. I'm willing to drop these bits of headcanon if necessary, but they are so minor that I almost didn't feel they needed mentioning.

(As a loose guideline, we would expect canon characters to have a personality section of around 500 words minimum and OCs to have a minimum of around 800 words. Don't worry too much about hitting exact word counts! We're more concerned with content than length. If you have a lot more to say—go for it. If your character is a minor character and there simply isn't that much to say—we understand. A good rule of thumb when writing your app is to assume the person reading it will be canon blind; provide explanations for canon-specific terms and don't assume that readers will know the full details of what events occurred or who other characters are.

Note that we discourage the use of headcanon, but if you feel you need to include it to help flesh out a character, please make sure that it has a solid basis in canon and clearly indicate it as separate from the purely canon information. We will not accept canon characters whose apps are primarily headcanon.)

Abilities:
Usually I play Gaius as being more your average human than some sort of super human juggernaut of destruction. Most of his abilities are things a normal human from planet earth would be capable of doing, but there are one or two exceptions. Personally, I'd prefer to play him as just an ordinary human being like I normally do, and perhaps let him develop the Carvaka specific powers a bit more.

Here is a list of Gaius' skills and abilities I have put together from all his classes in game if I'm not allowed to pursue the ordinary human path. Otherwise the basic facts are that he's a rogue capable of using swords, picking locks, blending into the shadows by wearing black clothes at night, and using his wits and charms to make it by.

(If a character has magical or otherwise better-than-human abilities, they should be described here. Just listing them out without explanation may not be enough, so please detail what they are, their strengths and limitations, etc. If a wiki exists with good, detailed information, it may be used to supplement your summary.)

▸SAMPLES:
(One sample may be a link to a post/log thread of decent length that's occurred in the last six months from another game, or from a meme/musebox if the setting is the same as what the character will be apped from and the thread provides a good example of characterization — i.e. no AU settings or overly cracky memes. The other sample must be written to take place in Carvaka's setting.

For the Carvaka-specific sample, we're looking for a good example of character voice and how the character will adapt to the setting. We suggest avoiding "where am I?" or "where are my friends?" type samples, as these tend to be generic and often not fully representative of a character's normal behavior. You can still send in these kinds of samples if you wish to, but we advise applicants to consider whether or not they fulfill the requirements that we're looking for.)

First Person:
Well this is a bit desperate, and I'll admit I never thought I'd sink so low but hey... desperate times call for desperate measures, right? ... So anyways, I bet you're all wondering what kind of sales pitch I'm about to throw at you, and if you're not wondering that, you should. I've made a few odds and ends to sell all of you. Everything from crafted jewelry, to bars of soap, little things to remind you of the finer things of home. What do I want in exchange for these fine things? Well I know what you might be thinking, but what I want... is sugar. That's not slang for sex or anything, I literally want sweets from candies to cupcakes and anything in between.

On that note, you folks need sex, I need sugar, to be completely on the frank and honest side I am prostituting myself for sweets. Women, Men, Taguel, Manakete, Wyvern, I will sleep with anyone and satisfy whatever weird kinks you have but dammit... I... need... SUGAR! Just so we're clear though? I'd kind of prefer to avoid anything that will cost me an arm and a leg if you're into weirder things, so I'll accept on a case to case basis.

... Cannibalism isn't a kink right?
